. john kerry did the job and stood in for mitt romney in the president's camp. and then standing in for the president in romney's debate preps, the silver haired guy in the pink shirt is ohio senator rob portman. and, in fact, portman has really become the go-to guy for republican candidates who need a sparg partner. he's really good at this. but here's the thing, he's never really talked publicly about his role, the preparation and how his debate preps have gone. until now. because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mcc

with senator john kerry and mitt romney is squaring off against senator rob portman. both candidates have challenges and checklists. president obama's working on shorter answers, trying to avoid sounding like the professor he was before the white house. democrats say he needs to look strong and forceful and not appear irritated or impatient. >> they're trying to get him into the mode of being able to answer questions, short, concisely, and to the point, and so it's much more like his mannerisms and his style and the way he comes across as opposed to information in this. >> reporter: and mitt romney? he has to seem relatable, especially after his 47% comment. how can he do that? show compassion? show he's competent and connect with the voters? >> on those three cs that's where he really has got to do well. >> reporter: romney arrived in colorado to continue his debate prep but took a brief break to rally supporters. >> what an honor. what a welcome. what a colorado welcome. thank you so much. >> the prls president also took a break with a visit to the nevada campaign office. >> hi, this is
for the president as bad a performance add george w. bush had in his first debate against john kerry. >> the president had an opportunity tonight. he created a problem for himself on social security tonight. he agrees with mitt romney. every liberal in this country knows that mitt romney wants to privatize social security down the road. and to do a deal with the devil on that would be the wrong thing to do. i think the president created a big problem for himself. i don't think he explained himself very well on the economy. i thought he was off his game. i was stunned tonight. rash elyou just mentioned about time, the president needs to get in and fight for that time. there's people that expect him to fight for that time. >> i thought the one thing that mitt romney did tonight that he has not done for the duration of the campaign and was very effective was just lop off the right wing of his party. he didn't care about them tonight. if something was popular, more money for community schools, he was for that. it didn't matter if it would make the right wing, how. whenever the president

couple of days, president obama will be debating with john kerry. of course, he is someone who is no stranger to presidential debates. now, campaign officials tell us that so far they have had four mock debates. not as many as they would have hoped. they say president obama had to cancel a few given he's dealing with issues like the unrest in the middle east. that's what they're telling us. we can also tell you they're trying to tamp down expectations ahead of wednesday's big debate. we're told according to campaign officials they're working with the president to try to get him to shorten some of his answers. as you know, this president has been described as long-winded at times. campaign officials feel as though that's not conducive to having a successful debate performance. so they're trying to encourage him to give shorter, crisper answers to make sure his key points don't get lost on wednesday night. as i said, both sides are trying to tamp down expectations. we cannot overstate that. they are really keeping praise on one another. there's really a lot at stake on wednesday
, sometimes in a word, smug, so we're told both senator john kerry playing mitt romney and senator rob portman playing the president have been pretty tough, pretty tough on the candidates in these practice sessions to try to help them prepare for what can be pretty stressful high pressure moments on that debate stage. >> i can't imagine. and specifically in colorado, one of the big issues there, immigration, mitt romney making news in talking to the denver post that, you know, if and when he's elected that he would not revoke that executive order that president obama recently issued, you know, to protect some illegal immigrants and documented immigrants who came here as young children. let me quote, in romney's words, the people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two year visa should expect it will continue to be valid. i'm not going to take something that they have purchased. what does that tell you, when you read into that, is he marching toward the center here? >> reporter: well, it tells you that he's politically being smart. it also tells yo
, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what the real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health care, about the role of government, what the president will do, according to top campaign aides is say, yes, look, the economy still has a long way to go. but it is in a much better place than it was and it is heading in the right direction. mitt romney will say that the president has had time to fix the economy, and there has been a lot of broken promises. so that's what we'll expect from both of the candidates as they take on each other tonight during the first debate. >> dan lothian repo
. yeah. for sure. you bet. i got it. >> even -- even the you betcha. that's a good impersonation. john kerry, he is the stand-in nosh mitt romney this go around. what is he doing with the president? i assume that there's a lot of tough policy questions. are they practicing zingers as well? how are they actually doing that? >> you know, i'm not sure how it's working out for them, but i can tell you what i would do or what normally is done. the challenge is that you are on offense. you are going to take incoming scuds, and you're going to have to respond to those and pivot, so the challenge in debate practice is how can you get to talking about what you want to talk about rather than chasing a rabbit down the hole. well, if you can imagine, suzanne, when you are standing behind a podium and somebody is attacking you, whether it's on your -- about something personal or about a policy or they're lying about you, you want with every fiber of your being to attack back or to respond, but the question is you only have so much real estate, and you have to pick your battles because you want to m
in these debate sessions. senator john kerry, democrat of massachusetts, he's standing in for governor romney. senator rob portman, republican of ohio who's done this for years on the republican side, he's standing in for president obama. and both president obama and romney say they're getting roughed up. the president took a break, he had a campaign event out in nevada and after that he stopped by to witness the hoover dam. they're taking a break from these preparations. but when you talk to the staffs, they say both senator kerry and senator portman are being pretty tough. because the main point tomorrow is make your policy proposals. for governor romney, he has to say the president has failed. what would he do differently in the economy? for the president, to defend the economic record and the other proposal of the last four years. but the tell, the substance is most of the debate, but you don't want to make a mistake. you don't want to look at your watch or sigh or do something that could offend people out the there. so we're told all of these sessions, not all of them, but most of these
